Real estate market looking up at Deep Creek Lake…

Posted in deep creek lake, deep creek lake homes, Deep Creek Lake Real Estate with tags , , , on March 1, 2010 by Betsy Spiker

YES, this statment is proving to be true!  There have been 17 residential sales thus far in 2010, with sales prices ranging anywhere from $80,000-825,000.  On top of that, there are 32 additional residential properties that are under contract or pending sale with asking prices of  $42,900-2,250,000.  This is potentially 49 sales for the 1st quarter of 2010.  Nothing to shrug off considering the low consumer confidence we’ve seen over the last 18 months.

For comparison, there were 18 home sales during the same time last year ( 1/1/09-3/1/09), 32 sales in 2008, 49 sales in 2007 and 67 sales in 2006.  Our average list price to sales price ratio is still 91%, which is considerably good when looking at the nation’s averages.  (Source for # of units sold: Metropolitan Regional Information Systems, MRIS)

You can take Mali away from Deep Creek, but you sure can’t take Deep Creek out of Mali…

Posted in deep creek lake with tags , , , , on February 23, 2010 by Betsy Spiker

Well, if you haven’t noticed from past blogs, it’s obvious that I’m a dog lover!  When we brought our first ever French Mastiff home in May 2008, we thought our lifestyle of living between Deep Creek Lake and the beach would suit her to a tee.  What we discovered, after several trips to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, was that Mali didn’t care for the heat, the sand or the ocean water!   In fact, it was all we could do to coax her onto the beach, which made it a long day for both her and us.  As evidenced by the photo above, Mali would simply plop herself down by the sand fence in hopes we would take her back to the house.

However, when her first winter came around it was quite evident that she was a snow dog.  The 2009/2010 winter at Deep Creek Lake, Maryland has given us a whopping 19′ of snow thus far.   Our last big storm left Mali’s head barely above the snow when she went out to play.  There was a time early this winter that she used to go off the back deck to do her business; now the steps leading off the deck are blocked by a 5′ barrier of white splendor.  The photo below was taken just this weekend following her bath.  Rather than dry off by the fireplace, like our terrier, she preferred to roll around in the snowdrift soaking wet!

A friend of mine sent me this poem today.  Thought I would share…

If you want someone who will eat whatever you put in front of him
and never say it’s not quite as good as his mother’s
..then adopt a dog.

If you want someone always willing to go out, at any hour,
for as long and wherever you want  …
..then adopt a dog.

If you want someone who will never touch the remote, doesn’t care
about football, and can sit next to you as you watch romantic movies
..then adopt a dog.

If you want someone who is content to get on your bed just to
warm your feet and whom you can push off if he snores
..then adopt a dog !

If you want someone who never criticizes what you do, doesn’t care
if you are pretty or ugly, fat or thin, young or old, who acts as if
every word you say is especially worthy of listening to, and loves
you unconditionally, perpetually ..
..then adopt a dog.

BUT, on the other hand, if you want someone who will never come
when you call, ignores you totally when you come home, leaves hair
all over the place, walks all over you, runs around all night and only
comes home to eat and sleep, and acts as if your entire existence
is solely to ensure his happiness …
..then adopt a cat!

Now be honest, you thought I was gonna say… marry a man, didn’t you?

Deep Creek Lake Warnings

Deep Creek Lake ice warnings….snowmobiles and Deep Creek Dunk.

Public Safety Warning Issued for Deep Creek Lake

GARRETT COUNTY – 2/16/2010

Printer friendly

The Maryland Park Service reminds all snowmobilers of the potential for unseen safety hazards on Deep Creek Lake, particularly at night.  Starting on Wednesday, February 20th, an area of ice will be removed near Uno Chicago Grill on Garrett Highway to create open water for the Special Olympics Deep Creek Dunk. This area will remain unsafe for quite some time and will be marked with reflective traffic cones.  Also be aware that lake surface conditions under bridges where road salt and abrasives are plowed from the pavement are often particularly hazardous. Other conditions that may cause unpleasant situations are unseen snowdrifts or pressure ridges that can act as ramps and cause sleds to become airborne leading to a loss of control and accidents.

Deep Creek Lake is a part of the designated ORV trail system permitting use by registered snowmobiles only. Permits are available by mail or at any of the local State Park offices during normal business hours. Snowmobiles may operate at night if equipped with working head and taillights. Access to the lake may be made at Deep Creek Lake State Park or with permission from a private landowner with a permit site adjacent to the lake.

Ice fishermen, hikers and cross-country skiers traveling on the lake should also exercise caution.  The wearing of or having readily accessible life preservers could prevent a tragedy.  If you encounter people, pets or wildlife that have fallen through the ice, contact either 911 or the toll free DNR Communications number 1-800-628-9944 for assistance.

For further information on ice conditions at Deep Creek Lake, contact a ranger at the Park Headquarters office (301) 387-5563 or the Discovery Center on weekends at (301) 387-7067.

Deep Creek Lake on the crest of The Eastern Continental Divide

Deep Creek Lake

Some people that travel to Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County, Maryland say that it’s almost like someone flipped the weather switch once you cross over the Eastern Continental Divide line in the Eastern most part of Garrett County, near Grantsville, MD.  And, living in Deep Creek Lake my entire life, I can attest to that!

Whether you’re commuting to the area from Baltimore, DC or Northern VA you might get the impression on the ride here that there won’t be any fresh snow when you arrive.  But, hold on, just as soon as you top the hill at Finzel and again at Keysers Ridge you will come to find that this is not the case at all.  The Eastern Continental Divide falls just between these 2 mountain ranges, that’s why many say it’s a landmark for the weather to come ahead.  In fact, Garrett County has the highest elevations in Maryland, ranging from 1800-3000 feet in most areas and 3000-4500 feet in a few small spots.  See Maryland elevation map courtesy of geology.com: http://geology.com/state-map/maryland.shtml.

The Eastern Continental Divide, in conjunction with other continental divides of North America, demarcates two watersheds of the Atlantic Ocean: the Gulf of Mexico watershed and the Atlantic Seaboard watershed.  Prior to 1760, the Divide represented the boundary between the British and French colonial possessions in North America.  The ECD runs south-southwest from the Eastern Triple Divide through several Atlantic Seaboard states (and West Virginia) to the watershed of the Florida Bay, which is adjacent to both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.  (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Continental_Divide)

Find out for yourself.  Pack up the family and head as far West as you can go in MD to Maryland’s only ski resort for the weekend, Wisp Resort.  You’ll experience Deep Creek Lake in it’s winter wonderland.  www.DeepCreekLakeProperty.com

One of Deep Creek Lake’s Own to be Inducted into the Maryland Business Hall of Fame

Posted in deep creek lake, deep creek lake property, Deep Creek Lake Real Estate with tags , , , , , on January 26, 2010 by Betsy Spiker

The Maryland Chamber of Commerce announced their 2010 inductees of the Maryland Business Hall of Fame this week.  Among the 3 inductees honored in Maryland is Karen Myers of Garrett County/Deep Creek Lake, Maryland.

The Maryland Business Hall of Fame was established in 2000 to recognize the accomplishments of entrepreneurs and business executives throughout Maryland whose contributions, in business and in the community, have helped to advance the quality of life for Marylanders and the state’s business climate.  Individuals are nominated by members of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce. The inductees are selected by the Chamber’s Executive Committee, and honored each year at the Maryland Chamber’s Annual Membership Meeting and Business Hall of Fame Awards Dinner. Prior Maryland Business Hall of Fame inductees include luminaries such as Bill Marriott of Marriott International, Chip Mason of Legg Mason, the late Frank Perdue of Perdue Farms and Jeong Kim of Lucent Technologies. (Source: Maryland Chamber of Commerce, http://www.mdchamber.org/programs/halloffame.asp)

Karen Frazee Myers is the 10th generation of the founding Friend family in Garrett County.  Her entrepreneurial endeavors began in 1978 with the opening of a family-operated log home company, Mountaineer Log & Siding, still owned today by Mrs. Myers.  At about the same time, she launched A&A Realty, a real estate Brokerage serving Garrett County and Deep Creek Lake, Maryland.  Karen has continued her passion for helping people achieve the American dream of homeownership and is now the Broker/Partner of Wisp Resort Development, Inc. /Wisp Resort Sales Center atop Wisp Mountain in McHenry, Maryland.

In addition, over the last 12 years, Karen has been an integral part of the successful negotiation and acquisition of Maryland’s only ski resort, Wisp Resort.  The new vision for Wisp began in 1994 with the basic land purchase of nearly 2,400 acres, followed in 2001 by the acquisition of the ski and golf operations of Recreational Industries, Inc.— all now known as WISP RESORT.  After donating 550 acres to the Adventure Sports Center (which is now known as the Fork Run Recreation Area) and acquiring additional adjacent parcels, land ownership exceeds 3,000 acres.

She and her 2 partners, Gary Daum and Steve Richards, have invested in significant capital improvements since the Wisp Resort acquisition and assemblage of 3,000 acres to enhance the experience and lifestyle of Wisp owners and patrons.

One of their most noteworthy contributions to Garrett County & Deep Creek Lake to date is a private, mountaintop 18-hole golf course, Lodestone Golf Club.  The developers secured the services of a 3-time U.S. Open Golf Champion, Hale Irwin, to assist them in the design of the course.  The golf course construction was completed in October, 2009; and all 18 holes will open for play by June, 2010.  In addition, they have invested in the current Wisp Resort public course, which is ranked among the “Top 100 Mid-Atlantic” courses.

While owning and operating two businesses and having been selected as the first woman appointed to a bank board in Garrett County, she has raised two children, Adrian and Betsy Spiker. Karen has taught them the importance of education and hard work as well as kindness to others. Both of her children have chosen to make Garrett County their home and the place they will contribute their working careers to continue efforts to improve the county.

Karen has devoted her career to expanding the opportunities available for the populace of Garrett County.  Teaching and training are just two of the many ways she shares her experience and life lessons with others.  A large percentage of the licensed real estate agents in the county have received at least part of their training from Karen personally – whether as pre-licensing instruction, weekly training in the office, special session or through continuing education classes that she has taught.

Karen Myers is a shining example of Garrett County’s past, present and future.  Her many accomplishments and contributions demonstrate that she is one woman who has always believed anything is possible.  Her perpetual drive, as well as her devotion to her county, stand testament as to why she is being honored as a 2010 recipient of the Maryland Business Hall of Fame.

Give Thanks for Snow in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland!!

The time has come.  Old Man Winter is knocking on the door!  This photo was taken from my home this morning around 8:00 AM in Deep Creek Lake/McHenry, Maryland.  The snow has not stopped falling ever since.  If the temperature and humidity hold strong, I’d say it’s a good possibility Wisp Resort will turn on the snowguns and begin building their base.

The cold temperatures remind us of a few things we need to keep in mind to avoid any hassles this winter:

  • Be sure your heat is set at a temperature that your pipes won’t freeze.
  • Arrange for your snowplowing service to plow when there is more than 4” of accumulation.  This will make it possible for REALTORS® to show the property.
  • Shovel walkways, entrances and sidewalks for easy access to the home and for Buyers to see what lies beneath.
  • Provide a mat inside the front door for wet shoes and boots.
  • Display pictures of the property showing what it looks like in spring, summer and fall.

Lodestone Golf Course Takes Shape at Wisp Resort in Deep Creek Lake

Posted in deep creek lake, lakefront, maryland, real estate, Wisp, Wisp Resort with tags , , , , on September 24, 2009 by Betsy Spiker

Wow, I don’t know much about golf courses (except that I had the privilege to visit The Masters last year) but this is a masterpiece in my eyes.  Built on top Wisp Resort mountain and overlooking Deep Creek Lake, Maryland there are some amazing mountain and water views in play.  Lodestone Golf Club is a Signature Hale Irwin course architected by Design Workshop.  Hale is a 3-time U.S. Open winner with a love for this area.  It didn’t take he and his team long to discover that the Wisp mountain had a landscape that could be disected into a beautiful course.  This course has some of the sexiest grass in the industry with bent grass fairways, bluegrass rough’s and fescue native areas.  Challenging for any level golfer; opening Summer 2010.  Nine holes are open for member play now.  Hope you can visit.  www.DeepCreekLakeProperty.com
